Uniseals come from bulk reef supply tomorrow so I'll add the outlet tube and skimmer pump inlet on Saturday! I still need to decide how to attach the neck to the bottle. I was thinking WO16, but that stuff doesn't dry very fast. Is there a good tank safe glue I could use to make a water tight seal?

50Lbs of Pukani live rock - 3 big pieces, a little disappointed about that, but we'll see how they look once they're aquascaped. They also smell like death so I'm probably going to have to cook them and cycle them in a box before I can use them to get all the phosphates out

    Re: New job, new DIY

Ugh, I got the $1000 MP60 pumps from ebay today and they're totally broken...didn't want to deal with this on something so expensive.

I got a bunch of plumbing parts in today:

Tested out the skimmer and couldn't be happier. I threw in 1/4 cup of goop from my 150 and it sucked it out in less than 2 minutes:

    Re: New job, new DIY

Two quick questions. What pump do you have hooked up to the skimmer? And also, and yes this is a serious question, I know the skimmer is going to be enough but do you think it will over skim for what your application? I might do this on my 210g predator tank.

It's a sedra 9000 pump. This setup is rated for 450 gallons so it's plenty for my ~300 gallon setup.

Were you the one that asked me about the bubble blaster pump? That'd be a good one too. I picked the sedra because I've had very good luck with them over the years.

    Re: New job, new DIY

so i've been loking at your skimmer you made. How do you decide on the capacity of this DIY skimmer? I mean for the pump thats easy cause you have the GPH, but for the water bottle does the size matter or not?

The way you made it looks just like the ones in the store and looks really easy to do.

    Re: New job, new DIY

@fiesta, Well, the dimensions of the jug are the same dimensions of the original tube that came with the skimmer I stole the parts from, so I'm just assuming everything is still the same :P

    Now to the DIY!

I built most of the bones of stand today. I really wish I had a power mitre saw. My little mitre box and my arm got a workout today. On another note, some ass cut me off trying to get into the walmart parking lot today while I was transporting the wood. Of course I slammed on the breaks to avoid the guy...and a 2x4 crashed into my windshield...there's another $280 to add to the build cost.

I'll add the bottom decking tomorrow and build the top frame and decking later this week. I'm going to use the top frame as a jig to cut my access holes in the top piece of acrylic. 3" flange with 3x 6" Braces.

Doesn't FL insurance cover the cost of a windshield? I know mine paid for mine when I broke mine. I'd look into that. Also, that stand is looking good.

The stand is looking good, but is that stand in two pieces or am I seeing it wrong?

    Re: New job, new DIY

@crazy, I looked into that last night a little bit. All I could find was that there was no deductible if the damage could be repaired. I need a new windshield. There's like a 15" crack. I'll call Progressive today and see if Florida has some special law. Although, I'll eat the cost if my premium is going to increase. Car insurance is such a racket.

Yep, two pieces. I wanted to make it easy to carry and transport. Since I have to move this thing 1,000 miles for the install I didn't want anything super heavy and awkward. I'll carriage bolt the two sides together once it gets to its final resting place. The stand will probably weigh twice as much as the acrylic by the time I'm done :P

The only things I bought for the skimmer were the plumbing parts. I got the pump, neck and cup off of a broken ASM G4plus skimmer.

    Re: New job, new DIY

Looks like you can buy the cup, neck and cap for ~$100, but that's what I paid for the whole broken skimmer :P

    http://www.fishsupply.com/repaforasmsk.html

On my old DIY skimmer I just stuck a 2" pipe in a large tupperware container using a uniseal to prevent leakage (I used Uniseals in this build too. They're the black fittings the plumbing pipes stick into)
