great job joey! i've bought wood... and going to buy more! i've got a ton of stands to build for a whole bunch of empty tanks gathering dust! LOL!

one question. i know that you don't feel wood glue is necessary... but what are your thoughts on pre-drilling?

    I'm not joey lol, but
but what are your thoughts on pre-drilling?
    ,

I recommend pre drilling in most cases just because I've seen wood split way too often ruining a perfectly good piece. The last thing you need is a few hundred pounds of water and glass sitting on a split leg.

    Great how-to joey!

    Re: DIY aquarium stand

DeBrito is right. Pre-drilling is a good idea. But i find with 2x4's and #6 screws, its not really needed.

You'll see me go more into this, when i build the canopy. The canopy uses a 1x2 frame, and must have the holes pre-drilled, or the screws will in fact split the wood.

    DIY aquarium stand

Right, I have been looking at it and I will most likely be building a marine setup rather than buying a new one with all the equipment. Hmm, I am thinking 150 cm long x 60cm deep, undecided on the water depth, but at least a 400L display tank. With LED lighting.

Your DIY stand video has pretty much made up my mind. Haha.

Joey, will your design happily hold a 150cm x 60cm x 60cm tank of about 540L without bracing in the centre on the front and back?

Is there a reason you do not want center braces?

I don't mind on the back, but just for easy access at the front.

Glass. The cost I can get a glass tank built for is a fraction of the cost for acrylic and cheaper than me building the glass tank.

    Re: DIY aquarium stand

Great video Joey, the stand I made last year is using the same idea. Just learned about it from an online picture when I googled diy aquarium stand. Nice to see it will hold the larger tanks also. I went a little over board on mine:

    Thanks for the tube.
    The stand looks sturdy.
I was also thinking how I had to make a solid substructure, for possibly my new project.
Lol I don't continue to search.

Came to say the same thing. Looks like whoever owned that store was paying MSRP and then selling everything at twice the cost to the customer :P
