View Full Version : Question About Magnesium Spike

My Chiropractor has a SW tanks that is about 6 years old and it has been stable (as far as water parameters go) for the entire time except for the last month. All of a sudden the magnesium levels have shot up to over 1500ppm. The magnesium was usually between 1400 and 1500 closer to 1500 but starting a month ago the levels went up to 1585 - 1600 over a 24 hour period. Any ideas as to why this would happen. He hasn't changed anything it the tank.

Someone changed something then. Minerals don't spike unless you add something or mix your salt wrong.

OR the test kit is bad. How old is the kit?

Test kit is 3 months old. All the other parameters are the same as they were before the magnesium spike. Salinity is the same.

magnesium takes forever to leave the aquarium.. if he's putting additives into the tank, that have magnesium in them, then that's why it is so high.

I agree with h2so4hurts, magnesium wont get that high unless you did something to the tank. Additives/supplements are my guess.

High magnesium really isn't something to get worried about. I'd see if I could find a buddy with a different test kit. What brand is it? Elos and Sailfert are really the only ones I trust.
